A few thoughts based purely on biased opinions…
During my time in education, a well-known critic came to my studio and described my paintings as ‘paintings on holiday’ which looked like they ‘could jump off the wall and kick you down the stairs’. He might have meant all this as an insult but I took it as a compliment. Delusion is often the best form of self-protection!
Paintings shouldn’t be passive objects that hang limply on the wall and go well with the sofa. They should command attention and have a physical and emotional presence in the same way that a person does. They should also be believable in their own right without having to be a representation or illustration of something else.
